Furniture Touch Up Markers are Lifesavers!
Hey everyone! I want to share an easy way to fix scuffs and scratches on furniture using furniture touch up pens! I was pretty hesitant to try these as it seemed too good to be true... but my furniture was looking pretty rough in places due to moving furniture ourselves, dogs, and running into it with the vacuum 🙈 I really didn’t want to sand the furniture down and stain it again just for a few scratches, and buying new furniture was off the table. (Get it?!) So, I decided to try a quick fix using furniture touch up pens and I am amazed by the results!!
The particular pens I used are Katzco Furniture Touch Up Pens which I got off Amazon. I got these particular ones because they came with 6 different shades and colored wax. These 6 colors have been able to cover up scuffs in all of my furniture from black wood coffee tables to light brown chairs. I especially like that it came with the colored wax which comes in handy for deeper scuffs that need filled in to be even with the rest of the furniture. One particular place that this was helpful was the surface of an antique bureau we were given that I just couldn't bring myself to touch with sandpaper.
Today I am going to show you how well these work on this dark wood shelf we keep in the bathroom that has gotten scuffed over the years.
I start by choosing 3 shades which are close to the furniture piece I am working on. Here I chose “maple” “cherry” and “walnut.” I judge what shade I use based on the shade of the cap of each marker, not the name. The piece of furniture I am working on today is not what I would consider cherry, yet the “cherry” marker is the exact shade I need.
Once I decide on the three shades I am going to use I get a paper towel and am ready to go! I start with the lightest shade first and go over the scuff, then wipe over the ink with a paper towel immediately after. I do this twice with the lightest shade and then move on the the marker which is one shade darker.
I then do the same steps using the darker marker, doing one coat, paper towel, then one more coat. In this case I like how it looks after the second shade of marker and did not use the darker marker.
I then did the same steps on the scuffs on the other leg of the shelf. Total time spent on this was less than ten minutes!
And that's it! How easy is that?!
What I have learned using this is:
1) Start light and go darker. These markers work best when layered and blend much better when you use a lighter shade first
2) Make sure to wipe with a paper towel after each coat from the furniture marker! This also helps everything blend together
I have used this method on everything in our house from our cabinets, to the wooden base of the couch, to the TV stand and even that old antique desk we inherited! This process is so easy, fast and works wonders! Here is a before and after of the cabinets I did a few months ago. (I wish I would have taken more pictures of the impressive scuffs I was able to fix). But this one is pretty good!
